Ayurveda, a.k.a. the “Science of Life,” is a life-changing, holistic healing system that originates in ancient India. In this retreat, we will explore the foundational elements of Ayurveda, including the Pañcabhūta (the five great elements), the three Doṣa (constitution types), and the 20 Guṇa (attributes) that characterize the elements and dosha types. We will include hands-on learning with food, ingredients, and spices to cultivate culinary skills that you can take home and practice.
In Ayurveda, we must build a relationship with the five elements that we consume and digest through our food and environment. These five elements in different ratios make up our individual dosha type, our psycho-metabolic constitution type. In this retreat, we will explore the concepts of Prakṛti Doṣa (the innate mind-body type that one receives upon conception), and Vikṛti Doṣa, (the current predominating imbalance in an individual). We will learn how to create harmony and balance using the Shadras, the six tastes of Ayurveda, by selecting and preparing the appropriate foods and spices for our season and dosha type. Come find out why in Ayurveda, no food is considered inherently “good” or “bad,” as each substance in the universe can be used as medicine, depending on various factors such as time, place, and circumstance.
We will play with the “law of opposites” to create simple tools to remedy imbalances in day-to-day situations and discomforts. We will delve into the importance of digestive fire (agni) and how it helps us assess the qualitative value of our digestive system.
Finally, we will consider the spiritual aspect of Ayurveda, which seeds at its core. According to Ayurveda, well-being is not complete without spirituality and building a connection with the True Self, a greater source, or Causal Being, and of course…love.
By learning the fundamentals of Ayurveda, we can take ownership and care of our own health, empowering us to be more independent and free. We can build awareness around these principles and take steps towards healing.
Join us, in this retreat to learn how to use the concepts of Sadhana, Dosha, Guna, Agni, Shadras, and Dinacharya to maintain balance and nourish our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The course is led by Sarah Dunfee, NAMA Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner. See her full bio, here. https://www.bhumishaktiayurveda.com/about-3

Ayurveda’s definition of health, wellbeing is not complete without spirituality and building connection with the True Self & a greater source or Causal Being –and of course, love.
Learning the fundamentals of Ayurveda helps empower us so we can be free and more independent in taking ownership and care of our own health.
We will go into detail about the benefits and properties of each taste and what happens if we include too little or too much of any of them. No food is considered inherently “good” or “bad,” as each substance in the universe has potential to be used as medicine, depending on time, place, and circumstance.
The potential to move the body as a form of medicine is a tremendous gift we should enjoy on a daily basis. Exercise or vyāyāma, in Sanskrit, is an important part of a complete Ayurvedic daily regimen, called dinacaryā
The energy of the divine feminine is present within all beings. By building awareness around this often-suppressed strength, greater balance can be brought back into our lifestyle to create a more harmonious state of being, both internally and externally.

One of the best times of day is when it is time to eat. Being fully present during this sacred time of bliss is of utmost importance. What we consume, how much, and what time we eat affects how we digest, along with our sense of wellbeing.

An ancient Ayurvedic sutra from the Suśruta Saṁhitā states: “A person who is established in the Self, has balanced doshas, balanced agni, balanced tissues, proper elimination of wastes, properly functioning bodily processes and who is peaceful and content in the mind, senses and soul is defined as a healthy person.” (Su. It is evident from this classical text written by the surgeon Suśruta, that health is not simply the absence of disease, but the state of harmony and balance between all functions of body, mind, and spirit.
Explore the functions of each subdosha and how we can incorporate our knowledge of subdoshas to better understand Vikruti
When immersed in Ayurveda, we are introduced to Sanskrit vocabulary words for concepts that don't have direct translations in English. We do this to honor the purity of the passing down of science, and for learners to expand and open their minds to unique concepts that are new to us.
